Syracuse, NY -- A Syracuse man will receive an award this morning from the New York State Industries for the Disabled at a ceremony at Arc of Onondaga.
Jonathan Torres of Syracuse will receive the William B. Joslin Outstanding Performance Award. The annual award by the New York State Industries for the Disabled recognizes exceptional vocational and personal success.
Torres, who has a developmental disability, has been employed through Arc of Onondaga’s vocational division, Monarch, since 2009. He lives independently in his own apartment and takes public transportation to get to all the places he needs to be.
Torres works five nights a week on a mobile janitorial crew cleaning offices and office buildings. He also works at the 174th Air Force base once a month and is proficient at waxing and stripping floors.
In a news release, Torres said that working hard keeps him busy, challenges him, and offers him the opportunity to learn new things and “add to his resume.”
His goal in life to “work hard,” he said.
