Syracuse, NY -- A 17-year-old man and his younger accomplices are accused of trying to rob a Syracuse man Wednesday night using rocks and a cell phone, Syracuse police said.

The 28-year-old victim told police he was walking about 8:15 p.m. in the 300 block of Mountainview Avenue when he was approached by three males and a female. One of the four asked what the victim smoked and the victim told them that he didn’t smoke anything.

As the victim was walking away, someone in the group threw a rock, police said. The man turned and confronted the four, police said. During the confrontation, the victim said he was hit by a rock, punched and pushed. At that point, the oldest of the group put a cell phone to the back of the victim’s neck as if it were a gun and demanded money, police said.

The victim said he knocked the phone out of the hand of the assailant and was once again hit with a rock. A car then started down the street and the four assailants left the victim, police said.

The victim described his assailants to police and the four were found in the area, police said. The victim identified all four, police said.

Shahied G. McDonald, 17, of 509 Thurber St., was charged with assault and two counts of attempted robbery, all felonies, and criminal possession of a weapon.

The other three suspects were 13 and 14 years old and were given appearance tickets and released to their parents.
