NEWBURYPORT, Mass. - The Coast Guard has ended its search for a recent college graduate who was swept off a Plum Island sandbar as she and her friends spent an unseasonably warm day at the beach.

The Coast Guard announced Wednesday that it had stopped looking for 22-year-old Marina Kohn, although local and state authorities were continuing their search. Harbormaster Paul Hogg tells The Newburyport Daily News that the operation is now considered a recovery effort, meaning Kohn is presumed dead.

Kohn's mother said her daughter just returned home last week after graduating from Syracuse University.

Authorities say the group got caught on the sandbar at the mouth of the Merrimack River on Tuesday evening as the tide rushed in. Seven people were pulled from the water, but Kohn could not be located.
