Syracuse, NY - After a warm and sunny start to the day today, showers and thunderstorms could pop up in the area this afternoon and tonight.

The National Weather Service forecast for the Syracuse area calls for a 40 percent chance of rain this afternoon with the greater likelihood for thunderstorms after 1 p.m. Some of the storms could contain small hail and gusty winds.

The high today is expected near 85 after Wednesday's record-setting 90-degree high.

The chance of rain and thunderstorms increases to 60 percent overnight. Storms are more likely before 2 a.m. with cloudy skies then continuing overnight.

Some storms tonight could be severe with large hail and gusty winds.

Friday is expected to be mostly cloudy with a slight chance of showers and a high of about 78 degrees.

Sunny skies are expected again for Saturday and Sunday with a high Saturday in the upper 70s and Sunday's high around 85 degrees.
