Syracuse, NY -- A Syracuse firefighter's personal vehicle was stolen from a North Geddes Street fire station this morning, leading to a Syracuse police chase that damaged three other vehicles, police said.

Juan Ramos, 34, of 123 Hovey St., was taken into custody in the 100 block of Plum St. after a brief foot chase, Sgt. Tom Connellan said. Ramos was charged with criminal possession of stolen property and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, both felonies, and unlawful fleeing of a police officer and resisting arrest, both misdemeanors. He also was charged with several vehicle and traffic violations.

The firefighter's black pickup truck was reported stolen at 7:21 a.m. from Fire Station 5 at 110 N. Geddes St. At 7:40 a.m., the car was spotted by a cruiser on Merriman Avenue, the driver refused to pull over and the chase began, Connellan said.

The chase at one time went north in the southbound lanes of South West Street, witnesses said. At least one vehicle was struck as the stolen truck tried to get around the car during the chase, witnesses said. At least two Syracuse police officers followed the truck north in the southbound lanes, a witness said.

The vehicle chase ended in the 100 block of Park Avenue, where Ramos jumped from the pickup truck. The truck kept rolling and struck another vehicle.

Three vehicles, including the one of that was parked, were struck during the chase, but all damage was minor, Connellan said. No one was hurt, he said.

Ramos will be arraigned Thursday at Syracuse City Court.
