Clay, NY -- An SUV went through a back yard and through a garage before coming to rest against a tree in the front yard of a Clay home this afternoon.

State police and Clay firefighters are still on the scene of the crash at Trina Circle and Caughdenoy Road.

A tan Jeep Liberty was traveling easterly on Caughdenoy Road when it left the north side of the road, said Trooper Jack Keller. The Jeep's route was clearly visible along the side of the road, snapping a seven-inch-diameter pear tree in the back yard of the house at 7985 Trina Circle and into the south wall of the house's garage.

In front of the house, the Jeep's path was marked by strewn recyclables, gardening tools and a bicycle until it ends at the sycamore tree in the front yard.

The driver of the Jeep was identified by Keller as Gordon Thorp, 75, of Evesborough Drive, Clay.

A witness following Thorp told troopers the vehicle was driving fine but just left Caughdenoy Road west of the intersection with Trina Circle. Thorp told troopers he didn't remember anything about the crash until he came to with the Jeep in the tree.

Thorp did not appear to be hurt in the crash, Keller said, but he suffered a seizure in the ambulance and was taken to a hospital.

"We don't know if this was a medical condition," Keller said. "He just remembers blacking out."

John M. Irwin, the homeowner, was in the house at the time of the crash and was not hurt.

"There was an incredible crash," Irwin said.

When Irwin investigated the crash, he at first couldn't find the vehicle that hit his house "because he was over there by the sycamore," he said.

The Clay codes enforcement officer said the house was safe for occupancy, Keller said.
