This year's celebration comes less than two weeks after Kim Jong Il's re-election to the party's top post and the news that his 20-something son would succeed his father and grandfather as leader.

From the Telegraph:

Millions of North Koreans got their first look at their next leader on Sunday, when Kim Jong-un appeared live on state TV for the first time.

The younger Kim stood alongside his father Kim Jong-il, North Korea's current leader, as they reviewed a massive military parade in the capital Pyongyang held to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the founding of the ruling Workers Party of Korea.

Kim Jong-un's appearance in front of thousands of goose-stepping soldiers and crowds of cheering civilians came two days after Yang Hyong-sop, a senior Workers Party official, appeared to confirm that he would be the secretive state's next leader. "Our people are honoured to serve the great president Kim Il-sung and the great leader Kim Jong-il. Now we also have the honour of serving the young general Kim Jong-un," he said on Friday.
