Syracuse, NY - The newly elected chairman of the Onondaga County Republican Committee reacted sharply Wednesday to County Executive Joanie Mahoney's decision to endorse Democrat Andrew Cuomo for governor.

"Her support in no way reflects the spirit of the Republican Party, nor does it signal that our party will just stand by and let another Cuomo assume the governor's mansion," Tom Dadey said at a hastily arranged news conference. "Joanie's decision today is likely to sadden many Republicans who have supported her in her own electoral pursuits and may even feel that she has let them down."

Dadey, flanked by party officials from eight towns and the city of Syracuse, spoke from a podium with a prominent "Paladino for the People" poster hanging from it. He said Mahoney called him Tuesday to inform him of her decision, and he tried unsuccessfully to talk her out of it. But he said Mahoney's action will not divide the party or affect his relationship with her.

Despite Mahoney's announcement, he said, "the nearly 600 members of the Republican Committee and thousands of other Republicans" will continue to wholeheartedly support Republican Carl Paladino, who he said is the best hope for change in Albany.
