The accident involves two trash-hauling tractor trailers.
Canastota, NY -- An East Syracuse man died when his car was crushed by a tractor-trailer on the Thruway Thursday afternoon, police said.
State Police said Michael W. Almy, 55, of 200 East Yates St., was traveling west on the Thruway near the Canastota exit around 2:30 p.m. when he pulled to the right and slowed to avoid two vehicles stopped in the passing lane.
Two trash-hauling tractor trailers moved right from the passing lane, police said. The driver of the second semi, Hal G. Wood, 54, of Clifton Springs, pulled to the right and, spotting Almy’s Hyundai Elantra, tried to move back to the left, police said.
But the truck fishtailed, said State Police Sgt. Martin Zubrzycki, and Almy’s car was crushed by the truck.
Police believe the two tractor trailers collided briefly and are looking for the driver of the first truck, who left the scene.
The crash remains under investigation, Zubrzycki said.
He said tickets may be issued in the unrelated accident that blocked the left lane. One driver in that crash was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.
