Syracuse, NY -- Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner joined Mayors Against Illegal Guns in announcing the release of a report analyzing Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms data that shows states with weak gun laws are disproportionately the top sources of guns recovered in out-of-state crimes. The report, Trace the Guns: The Link Between Gun Laws and Interstate Gun Trafficking, also shows that states with weak gun laws supply a greater proportion of guns recovered in crimes shortly after their initial purchase.
“New York State has some of the toughest gun laws in the country, yet more than half of the guns used to commit crimes here come from states with weak gun laws,” Miner said in a news release issued from city hall today.
Miner said that the city can’t stop the flow of illegal guns alone and called on state and national lawmakers “to take a stand on legislation that would choke off the criminal marketplace for guns.”
The report examines previously unreleased data provided by the ATF to Mayors Against Illegal Guns.
