Syracuse, NY -- A Syracuse man who police said robbed a West Brighton Avenue store before being shot by the man behind the store's counter was arraigned this morning in Syracuse City Court.
Rayshawn Johnson, who was handcuffed and chained, limped into his arraignment before Judge James H. Cecile about 10:30 a.m. Johnson, 29, of 111 McAllister Ave., was not represented by a lawyer during his arraignment and Cecile entered pleas of not guilty on Johnson's behalf to the charges of robbery and criminal possession of a weapon, both felonies.
Johnson told Cecile he was on parole and Cecile noted he had two prior felony convictions before Cecile ordered Johnson to be held without at the Onondaga County Justice Center.
According to the charges, Johnson was armed with a large kitchen knife when he entered Los Amigos grocery store, 204 W. Brighton Ave., about 8:50 p.m. Monday. After Johnson took money from the cash register, there was a struggle and Johnson was shot in the torso, according to court records.
