Syracuse, NY -- A Van Buren man’s petit larceny arrest Wednesday at the Carousel Center turned into a felony after packets of heroin were found on him during a search, Syracuse police said.
Kevin J. Wrobel, 21, of 1615 Gunbarrel Road, also was charged with felony and misdemeanor criminal possession of a controlled substance. He also was arrested on an outstanding misdemeanor warrant for criminal possession of stolen property.
A loss prevention officer with the J.C. Penney department store at the Carousel Center said she watched Wrobel take a $60 sterling silver ring from its box and put it in a shopping bag. After Wrobel walked out of the store, he was stopped by loss prevention officers and asked to accompany them to an office, police said.
As he was being escorted to the office, Wrobel kept putting his hand in the right pocket of his hooded sweatshirt, police said. Wrobel kept up the behavior after he was asked to keep his hands out of his pockets and was handcuffed, police said.
Officers searching Wrobel found a pack of Newport cigarettes containing cigarettes and 12 folded pieces of wax paper stamped with “Goya 10,” police said. When asked what was in the wax paper, Wrobel replied, “heroin,” police said.
