Syracuse, NY – Get out your shorts, Central New York. The thermometer is supposed to make another climb into the 90s before Friday is over.

But go ahead and toss them into the laundry when the day is over. National Weather Service forecasters in Binghamton say the temperature Saturday will get no higher than the mid-60s.

Getting a hot day at the end of September isn’t unusual, said Jim Brewster, a meteorologist at the Binghamton office. The record for the date since 1950 is 88, set in 1970.

“Push into over 90 and you’re into ‘unusual’ territory,” Brewster said. Three times since 1950 has the thermometer at Hancock Airport hit that mark after fall started, weather service records show, reaching 90 on Sept. 23 and Sept. 29, 1959, and 91 on Sept. 25, 2007.

It’s less unusual in fall or spring to get big temperature swings like the one expected overnight, Brewster said. Cooler air builds over Canada as summer turns to autumn and as the jet stream swings north and south, it either brings that cool air in from the north or admits warm air from the south, he said.

The transition tonight is going to be gradual, taking perhaps 12 hours to accomplish. The forecast overnight low, in the upper 50s, is normal, he said; just don’t expect Saturday’s high to climb too far past it.

Because the shift isn’t expected to be dramatic, it’s unlikely that violent thunderstorms will accompany the change, Brewster said.

Expect partly sunny skies with southwest winds gusting to 30 mph today, mostly cloudy skies with a 30 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms tonight and partly sunny skies Saturday, the weather service said.
