New York Gov. David Paterson on Thursday ordered that 2,000 state jobs be cut through layoffs and attrition by Dec. 31, according to a memo to agency commissioners. Paterson said layoffs in the 200,000-worker force could begin in mid-November.
Users of syracuse.com greeted the announcement with cheers, and a few offered suggestions on where to start cutting. Here's what one user, jeterisgreatest, had to say:
"If they do layoff workers, I hope that they start at the top and work their way down. What I mean is, start with all of the political appointments. Then go to the top management level, where they all have assistants who have assistants. Even though I am open to anything that will ease my tax burden, and shrink the overall size of Government, common sense does need to prevail here as well. More specifically, I don't want to see the number of people driving snowplows cut when according to Albany Times Unions listing of state wages, the average salary for the shmuck driving the plow is under 30K a year."
