Prepare to dig a little deeper into your wallets this summer for airfare.
Planning to travel this summer? Prepare to dig into your wallets just a little deeper. Five of the largest U.S. airlines have introduced “peak air travel surcharges” for almost every day when students are on summer vacation.
American, Continental, Delta, United and US Airways plan to add a $10 to $30 spike to fares every day from June 10 through August 22, except for July 4. Travel experts say July 4 is normally a slow day for air travel.
According to Farecompare.com, even AirTran, a discount airline, will be charging a flat $10 fee for 25 days within the date range. Other discount airlines remain fee free as of now.
The surcharge will be figured into the final price that a traveler is quoted, unlike separate baggage fees.
