Syracuse, NY--The Rosamond Gifford Zoo has narrowed the finalists in its penguin chick naming contest from 607 to six entries and they want the public to choose the winner.
The zoo received entries from as far away as Arizona in the contest to name the first Humbolt chick born at the zoo this year. The male chick hatched March 27.
Entries were judged on their creativity and overall appeal. Names with a Latin American influence reflecting the chick’s native countries of Chile and Peru were given preference.
The public can vote by emailing the zoo. List the name in the subject line of the email. Limit one vote per email address.
Facebook fans can place an additional vote on the zoo’s Facebook page.
All votes must be received by 4 p.m. on June 1. The zoo will announce the winner June 3, who will receive a VIP tour of the penguin exhibit and become an adoptive parent for a penguin for a year.
The finalists: Claudio, for Claudio Arrau, a classical pianist from Chile.
Esteban, which means Steven in Spanish.
Juntos, which was submitted by Ashliegh Kinder’s kindergarten class at the International School in Antofagasta, Chile. Kinder is from Syracuse and her class corresponds with her nephew’s second grade class in the West Genesee School District.
Santiago, the capital of Chile.
Sinchi, which means strong, vigorous or valiant in the Quechua indigenous language of Peru.
And Talcahuano, the city in Chile devastated by the 8.8 magnitude earthquake this year.
