The Post-Standard wins most first-place state Associated Press awards in its circulation category

Syracuse, NY -- The Post-Standard and its online and magazine affiliates took more first-place awards than any other newspaper in its circulation group at the New York Associated Press Association’s annual banquet Wednesday in Albany. Syracuse, NY -- The Post-Standard and its online and magazine affiliates took more first-place awards than any other newspaper in its circulation group at the New York Associated Press Association’s annual banquet Wednesday in Albany.

Overall, the newspaper’s reporters, columnists, editors, photographers and artists won 18 awards, second only to the (Albany) Times Union’s 23 plaques. The (White Plains) Journal News was third with 17 awards, followed by 16 for the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, seven for The (Schenectady) Daily Gazette and five for The (Middletown) Times Herald-Record.

The Post-Standard received nine first-place awards, compared with seven for the Times Union, six for the Democrat and Chronicle, three for The Journal-News and two for The Daily Gazette.

Competing in the 50,000- to 125,000-circulation class, The Post-Standard won these writing honors:

Columns: First place to Sean Kirst for writing about how one bereaved Danforth Magnet School student tried to help another through Christmas, the older generation’s lost ability to cross the political divide, and Albany politicians’ behavior toward women.

Business/Finance: First place to David Tobin for “Rush Order for Innovation Saves Combat Lives,” an article about Syracuse Research Corp. inventions used in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Brightest Headline: First place to Mark Libbon for “This headline not authorized by NCAA,” on an article by Bob Niedt about restrictions that the NCAA puts on cities hosting its “Sweet 16” regional men’s basketball championships.

Online Content: First place to Steven J. Pallone for “The Scarlet Ending Tapes,” a weekly video reality show about a Syracuse-area band, The Scarlet Ending. The show appeared on Syracuse.com.

Beat Reporting: Second place to John O’Brien and Michelle Breidenbach for four articles about the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office. The stories examined a woman Tasered by a deputy, the death of another woman from an ectopic pregnancy at the Justice Center Jail, competing helicopter evacuation services and overtime expenses at the training academy.

Arts/Entertainment Writing: Second place to Mark Bialczak for “A Look Back at Woodstock ’99,” a retrospective on the Rome rock festival.

Sports Columns: Third place to Jeff Kramer for columns about turkey calling and displaying a giant photo of his head at the Carrier Dome, and a letter urging the Washington Nationals to let pitching phenomenon Stephen Strasburg stay with the Syracuse Chiefs.

Blogging: Third place to Bob Niedt for his Storefront blog on Syracuse.com.

Competing against newspapers whose circulation exceed 50,000 subscribers, The Post-Standard won these awards:

Specialty Publications: First place to the staff for CNY: The Good Life.

General Interest Weekly: First place to Weekend for its June 25, 2009, Aug. 27, 2009 and May 20 editions.

Specialty Publications: Third place to the staff for Central New York Sports.

General Interest Weekly: Third place to Neighbors for its June 4, 2009, June 11, 2009, and May 27 editions.

Multimedia Packages: Third place to Bob Niedt and Mike Dupras for their interactive Penn Traffic database and map.

The Post-Standard’s photographers, competing in the over-50,000-circulation category, won these awards in the 2009-2010 Associated Press Association photo contest:

Photo Essay or Series: First place to Michelle Gabel for “Sudan’s Native Sons Make Up for Lost Time,” whose photos accompanied an article March 21 about efforts by some of Syracuse’s “Lost Boys” to help their homeland.

Videos and Slide Shows: Second place to Frank Ordonez and Dave Tobin for a presentation on the New York State Fair.

In addition, Post-Standard staff artist Tom Schmitt, competing in the 50,000-plus-circulation group, won an honorable mention in the category of Informational Graphic — Non-Spot News for “Honeywell Plans to Dig In.” It showed how Honeywell International Inc. proposed to dredge contaminated sediment from the bottom of Onondaga Lake and bury it in Camillus.
