Syracuse, NY – El Paso, Texas, set a high bar as this year’s host of the United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championship. And Syracuse officials plan to clear that mark next year.

The process begins Thursday as Congress President Darlene Baker joins local officials for a 10 a.m. news conference at Oncenter to get the ball rolling for the 2011 tournament and talk about its potential impact on Central New York.

Baker and other Bowling Congress officials will give a presentation to business people at a breakfast meeting to tell how they can get involved, said Danica Bryant, speaking for the Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The visit comes more than four years after the Bowling Congress named Syracuse the host for its 2011 women’s tournament.

The tournament will run April 7 to July 2, according to the bowling congress' Web site. Oncenter will be equipped with 48 lanes for the event. More than 44,000 people are expected to come and to spend millions of dollars while they’re here, Syracuse Convention and Visitors Bureau officials said.

Different groups of bowlers will be coming and going throughout the tournament, so it will be important for the community to maintain a high level of excitement over its entire course, Bryant said.

“These bowlers are ready for action like at 7 a.m. or at 2 in the morning. So restaurants need to know about this so they are open on Sundays and have extended hours,” Bryant said. “And it’s not just in Armory Square. They are looking to explore.”
