Syracuse, NY - A Camillus man was sentenced today to nine years in state prison for his role in a home invasion incident in which a disabled man was assaulted and his young daughter terrorized during a break-in at their home.

Stephen R. Meyer, 23, of 167 North Way, had nothing to say before being sentenced by County Judge Joseph Fahey for second-degree burglary.

Fahey, however, called the incident "one of the most ugly and cowardly" he had encountered in a long time.

Authorities said Meyer was one of three men who forced their way into a home in the 500 block of Elm Street in Syracuse about 5:30 p.m. March 10 in a plan to steal computer equipment.

The resident, who is paralyzed from the waist down, was beaten, kicked and knocked over in his wheelchair during the incident. Authorities said Meyer also held his hand over the mouth of the man's 10-year-old daughter to prevent her from screaming for help.

Authorities said the suspects fled with more than $10,000 in computer equipment.

Assistant District Attorney Shawn Weed said a second defendant, 17-year-old Ismeal Elmore of Linwell Terrace in Syracuse, previously pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary, second-degree robbery and petit larceny. He was denied youthful offender treatment and sentenced to serve 3 1/2 years in prison.

Charges are still pending against a third defendant, Weed said.
