Syracuse, NY -- A man who told police “my girl” was shot when police arrived at the scene of a fatal shooting Sunday on Syracuse’s Southside was arrested on drug charges an hour later and about five blocks away, according to Syracuse police records.

Syracuse police records detail the two encounters with police Sunday.

When police investigating a shots-fired call arrived about 6 p.m. at Glahn Avenue and West Colvin Street, a man was yelling his girl was shot. When police went to a car there, they found Morgan McMahon, 25, of Fairfield Avenue, unconscious and with a gunshot wound to her head.

McMahon died Monday at Upstate University Hospital from her wound.

Police identified the man yelling as Antwan Aiken, 26, of Glahn Avenue. When police tried to question Aiken, he said all he could remember was hearing a shot and seeing smoke.

Aiken then declined to cooperate more, saying “I ain’t talking,” and walked away, police said.

About 7 p.m., officers investigated a disabled car, parked at South Avenue and West Castle Street, that could have a connection to the shooting. When officers approached, they found Aiken standing next to the vehicle, a tan 1988 Buick Century.

Because there was a possible connection to the shooting, police towed the vehicle. Before towing, the asked Aiken if there was anything illegal in the car. Aiken, according to police, said there was marijuana in the vehicle’s center console.

Police found two bags of marijuana in the car, weighing more than 25 grams, and charged Aiken with criminal possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor, and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.

Police also found $839 in cash in Aiken's pocket.

Syracuse police declined to comment on the arrest.

“We are not discussing anything in this case,” Sgt. Tom Connellan said.

Police are making progress in the investigation, Connellan said.
