Albany, NY – State police are cracking down again on motorists who use their cell phones while driving on the state Thruway.
The four-day stepped up enforcement effort, phase four of “Operation Hang Up,” begins today and runs through Thursday, Thruway Authority officials and state police said. Troopers issued 816 tickets during a similar initiative last year.
State law forbids people from using their cell phones while driving except to call 911 or to call medical, fire or police help about an emergency. Violators can be fined up to $100, plus a mandatory $60 surcharge.
Text-messaging, Internet surfing and playing computer games while behind the wheel also is illegal, subject to a $150 fine, officials said.
