Syracuse, NY -- For 15 minutes Friday night, Clinton Street in Syracuse looked like the movie "Fame."
Shortly after 8:30 p.m., people leaving a dance competition at Trexx nightclub at the corner of Clinton Street and Herald Place began break dancing on the sidewalks.
For about 15 minutes, people gathered in small circles on the sidewalks taking turns dancing in the center. Young men did running flips down the middle of Clinton Street. One young man did a back flip off a small trailer parked in front of the club and then walked nonchalantly around the corner.
The dancing entertained security guards at The Post-Standard, located across the street from the club. Security cameras at The Post-Standard caught the action.
Club owner Danny Liadka and competition promoter Dean Clarke of Syracuse said they were busy setting up for the after party and were unaware that the competition had spilled out into the street. About 150 people attended the event, Liadka said.
The dancers were coming from Zero Gravity 9, a two-day event and after party, put on by Clarke.
Friday’’s non-alcoholic event, which was open to all ages, ran from 4 to 8 p.m. Dancers went up against each other in categories of two versus two in break dancing, one versus one in all style dancing, and one versus one for footwork.
After the competition, club staff cleared Trexx of teenagers, so that it could reopen to people 18 and older for an after party that went from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.
The finals take place today from through 5 p.m.
