Auburn, NY -- A one-day opportunity to turn in unwanted or unneeded prescription drugs for disposal will be offered Sept. 25 by the Auburn police and the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.

The collection is part of a national campaign by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to remove potentially dangerous drugs from medicine cabinets, police said.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 25, the public may surrender unwanted, expired or unused pharmaceuticals, controlled substances and medications to the Auburn police headquarters, 46 North St.

The program offers anonymity and no questions will be asked when people turn in controlled substances during the day at the police headquarters. People are encouraged to remove identifying information from prescription labels prior to turning them into police.

Intravenous solutions and syringes will not be accepted and any liquid medications must be turned in its closed, original container.

Those wishing to turn in drugs are asked to use the Market Street entrance to the police headquarters.
