Syracuse, NY – Carl Paladino’s big win over party designee Rick Lazio in the Republican primary for governor reflected the voter anger that has been welling up throughout 2010, Onondaga County’s GOP chairman said.

“Rick did a great job. He campaigned. But it’s obvious that Carl’s message resonated with the people more than Rick’s,” Chairman John DeSpirito III said this morning, reacting to Tuesday's primary. “Carl had the money, his own money, so he went out there and got the job done.”

The party’s U.S. Senate designees, Bruce Blakeman and Gary Berntsen, also lost . But it’s not so much that their messages – or Lazio’s, for that matter – differed so much from those of the winners, Joe DioGuardi and Jay Townsend, he said.

“Basically they all had the same message. But it was the way it was presented. Even with Carl and Lazio,” DeSpirito said.

In the gubernatorial race, the mad-as-hell approach worked, he said.

“People are mad as hell,” DeSpirito said. “They are mad.”

Victories in New Jersey and West Virginia hold out hope that enough Democrats and independent voters are mad enough at Albany and Washington to elect Paladino over Democrat Andrew Cuomo in November, he said.

"Nothing is impossible under today's scenerio," he said.
