The building at 55 Genesee St. will be renovated to include restaurant space on the ground floor and residential units upstairs.

Camillus, NY -- The village of Camillus has been awarded a grant of up to $156,500 to renovate the vacant building at 55 Genesee St.

The Empire State Development Corp. announced the grant on Tuesday.

The Camillus grant was among more than $10 million in grants, which are designed to retain 1,330 existing jobs and create 396 new jobs in New York state. The money will be used in conjunction with nearly $30 million in private lending.

In Camillus, the money will be used to stabilize the building at 55 Genesee St., which is currently condemned. The site located within 300 feet of village hall and across the street from the former Camillus Cutlery, which was once the village’s largest employer.

The building will be renovated to include restaurant space on the ground floor and residential units upstairs. Total project cost is $190,650.

Camillus Mayor Michael Montero was pleased with the news.

“Obviously it’s a wonderful boost, because it’s going to be a nice destination for people to come into the village and have a nice place to eat,” he said.

Montero said the village plans to develop trails in the village area.

“Hopefully, we can tie in a number of different attractions to make it appealing for people to come and patronize other businesses in the village,” he said.
