Volney, NY -- The case against Sara Landers has been held over for action by the Oswego County grand jury.
Landers' lawyer, Michael Shanley, said the case is being sent to Oswego County Court because nothing more can be done in Volney Town Court because of the felony charge against Landers. Only misdemeanors and violations can be dealt with in a lower court.
Landers, 22, of Fulton, is charged with second-degree manslaughter in connection with the death of her 9-month-old daughter, Reba J. Barton.
Landers is accused of leaving her daughter in a closed camper-trailer for more than two hours on a day when the temperature outside was more than 90 degrees. The trailer did not have working air conditioning.
The high temperature that day at Hancock Airport in Syracuse was 94 degrees.
Discussions were going on between Assistant District Attorney Gregory Oakes and Shanley concerning a possible plea deal in the case. Shanley said discussions could continue but it still was prudent to move the case to county court for further review.
