Syracuse, NY -- A bicyclist suffered a severe head injury Monday afternoon Syracuse’s Skunk City neighborhood when he was struck by a vehicle that then left the scene.
The bicyclist was riding on Rowland Street near the intersection with South Geddes Street shortly before 7 p.m. when he was struck by a gray or silver vehicle which fled the scene heading east on Rowland Street.
Police would not identify the bicyclist, other than to say he was a male in his 40s. He was, they said, in critical condition at Upstate University Hospital.
The bicycle, a blue Fuji mountain bike with a twisted front wheel and bent frame, lay along the south curb of Rowland Street as police investigated the scene. Small shards of glass, a pair of boots what appeared to be a bloody shirt were strewn about 20 feet beyond the bicycle. A bicycle seat lay in the grass between the road and the sidewalk, 10 feet beyond that a small cooler or lunch box lay on its side.
Police said they expected the vehicle involved had front-end damage and asked that anyone who might help with the investigation call 442-5151.
