Syracuse, NY -- Shots fired during a Pop Warner football game in Kirk Park this afternoon sent a large group of spectators running for cover, Syracuse police said.
A 15-year-old, who police are not identifying, was taken into custody and two handguns were recovered, police said. No one was hit by the gunfire.
Numerous shots were fired just before 5 p.m. in Kirk Park as youngsters from two Pop Warner football teams were competing, Sgt. Tom Connellan said.
The game was called off at halftime, Connellan said.
A coach for one of the teams was an off-duty police officer who was able to direct officers to the 15-year-old suspect running from the scene, Connellan said. Witnesses identified the youth as the shooter, he said.
The youth was taken into custody and confessed, Connellan said. A second suspect was reported as a black male wearing a white shirt and black pants, Connellan said.
