Eaton, NY – A town of Madison man was charged with driving drunk with his four children in the car after a rollover accident Saturday near the Eaton town line with Stockbridge, state police said.
Jason G. Caufield, 31, was driving a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer north on state Route 46 about 7:08 p.m. when the vehicle went out of control on wet pavement, slid off the east side of the pavement and overturned, coming to rest against a utility pole, troopers said.
Caufield was treated at the scene for minor cuts; his passengers – his 29-year-old wife and their four children, ages 1 to 11 – were unhurt, troopers said.
A breath test given at the state police Oneida barracks indicated that Caufield had a blood-alcohol level of 0.12, troopers said.
He was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated under Leandra’s law, a felony, and driving while intoxicated and four counts of endangering the welfare of a child, all misdemeanors, troopers said. A Leandra’s Law violation is charged when someone is suspected of driving drunk with a child under age 16 in the car.
Caufield was arraigned in Eaton town court and ordered held at the Madison County Jail on bail of $500 cash or $1,000 bond pending a court appearance Wednesday, troopers said.
