A story on the Syracuse Catholic diocese planning to spend $590,000 on scholarships, new programs and technology upgrades in its 24 schools in Central New York spurred a debate among syracuse.com users on Catholic school education vs. public school education. Here's what one user, fedupinpool, had to say:
"From my personal experience, both past and present, Catholic schools demand from their students a level of respect and excellence that is foreign to public schools. In public schools, there are excuses for everything. Not so in Catholic schools. When you demand that a students reaches a higher standard, students will perform. Public schools may have all the technology and perks, but they still do not perform well."Catholic schools are not immune to the 'problem child' either; behavior issues, learning issues, emotional issues are just tackled differently. Maybe the public schools need to take a look at how the Catholic schools do what they do and stop wasting the tax payers' money. I am thrilled that money will be used to enable more students to attend Catholic schools. Only good things will come of it."
