Progress is being made in cleaning up the creek, but citizen help is always appreciated.
As construction crews move toward completing a major portion of the long-awaited "Creekwalk," organizers of the ninth annual Onondaga Creek cleanup say they're optimistic about the future of the waterway.
Yet they also need more volunteers for that cleanup effort, which will be held this Saturday and the following Saturday along the banks of the creek.
“When we started out, it was really pathetic,” said Steve Seleway of the Creek Rats, the group that coordinates the cleanup. He recalled when the creek was thick with garbage and debris.
Much of it has been removed over nine years of work, but plenty remains to be pulled out and dragged away. Seleway said anyone interested in lending a hand should meet Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at a stone Kirk Park maintenance building on Onondaga Creek Boulevard, just off South Avenue.
Volunteers are asked to wear old clothes and sneakers. Seleway can be reached at 345-2727.
