Syracuse, NY – The city of Syracuse will commemorate the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with a ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Fayette Firefighters Memorial Park, South State and East Fayette streets.
By tradition, no speeches or announcements are made during the city’s ceremony. Instead, participants observe 17 minutes of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m., the time when the first jet struck the north tower of the World Trade Center, and ending at 9:03 a.m., when the south tower was hit.
Workers will erect two 5-foot pedestals made from red cement blocks to represent the towers, each topped by a flagstone with special candles that will be lit to honor the lives and families of those lost in the attacks on the trade center and the Pentagon, and those of United Flight 93, which crashed in a Pennsylvania field when passengers retook the plane from terrorists.
Officials also will display the “Flag of Heroes,” containing the names of all emergency service providers who lost their lives, and the “Flag of Honor,” which contains the names of all civilian victims of the attacks.
