Neighbors lose power, Pompey Center Road closed after sedan hits utility pole.
Pompey, NY – A 22-year-old man is dead following a one-car accident early this morning on Pompey Center Road, Pompey.
Sheriff Kevin Walsh said the victim was driving a Toyota sedan north on Pompey Center Road between Indian Hill Road and Trillium Trail when the car crossed the oncoming lane, went off the left side of the road and hit a utility pole, snapping it in half.
The accident was discovered by a passing motorist who called Onondaga County E-911 about 3:45 a.m. The victim, whom Walsh did not identify pending notification of relatives, already was dead when help arrived, he said.
Skid marks on the pavement indicate the victim may have swerved, perhaps to avoid an animal, Walsh said. The car may have rolled over but investigators are not sure, he said.
The victim’s remains were removed from the vehicle about 6:50 a.m., Walsh said.
About 180 National Grid customers are without power due to the accident. Pompey Center Road will remain closed between Indian Hill Road and Trillium Trail for several more hours while officials clear the accident scene and National Grid replaces the downed pole and restores electricity, Walsh said.
