Michael A. Hayes takes oath of office

Cazenovia officials have appointed a retired sergeant from the Madison County Sheriff’s Department to lead the village police force.

Michael A. Hayes of 2290 Route 20 East, Cazenovia, took the oath of office Tuesday evening, less than a month after the retirement of former Police Chief David Amico, who left after more than a decade at the helm of the village department.

Before approving the Hayes’ appointment, village officials passed a resolution calling for a more “community-oriented” style of policing, with the implementation of foot and bicycle patrols, the chief’s regular attendance at village board meetings and quarterly budget reports.

Hayes retired from the sheriff department’s criminal division in 2008 after 17 years of service. Village officials set his starting salary at $55,000.

Amico has taken a teaching position at Morrisville State College, Dougherty said.
