Syracuse, NY -- Law enforcement across Central New York launched a seat belt enforcement campaign today that will continue through Memorial Day weekend.

The "Click it or Ticket" campaign runs two weeks until June 8 and includes state police, county sheriff's offices and Syracuse police, among others.

In Syracuse, four to eight patrols a day will be checking motorists for seat belt use, said Sgt. Joel Cordone, of the traffic division.

Manlius Police also announced a campaign against aggressive driving from June 1 to June 8. Officers will target speeding, tailgating, failing to stop at stop signs and red lights, failing to yield to pedestrians and using a handheld cell phone while driving, among other violations. Patrols will hone in on East Genesee Street and North Manlius Street.

The overall enforcement is part of a statewide effort involving 600 police agencies, according to the state police. Last year, troopers issued 22,059 seat belt violations, and conducted over 137 safety restraint checkpoints across New York State during the two-week blitz.

Troopers also investigated 15 motor vehicle fatalities during the Memorial Day weekend last year, including eight that might have been avoided had the occupants been wearing seat belts, according to a news release.
