A New York Times poll finds New Yorkers are conflicted about the construction of an Islamic education center, which includes a mosque, near the World Trade Center site. Nearly the same percentage of respondents -- just over half -- opposed the project and said Muslims have the right to build near ground zero.
While some syracuse.com users commented about the First Amendment and it's guarantee of freedom of religion, user tipphill2006 said the fight is over political ideology, not the building of a mosque:
I love the headline. Like we needed a poll to find that we're conflicted over this. What a waste of a poll. Here is my own poll. How many words can you pick out of the following sentence that Democrats and Republicans would hold different views of: "One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." Let the debate rage on. As long as we debate in a healthy, open-minded way it's all good for us.
