Syracuse, NY -- A fire in a multi-apartment house on Syracuse’s Near Westside left several people without a place to sleep tonight, Syracuse fire officials said.
Firefighters were called about noon to 544 Seymour St., where they found fire coming from a second-story, bedroom window. The fire began in the bedroom and extended into the attic, District Deputy Chief Don Johnson said. The bedroom was gutted and the rest of the house had heat and water damage, he said.
No one will be allowed to stay in the building tonight, he said.
No one was inside when firefighters arrived, Johnson said, and no one was injured. It took about five minutes to get the fire out, he said.
The residents of the apartment were sitting on the back porch of the building when the fire started, Greg Smith, the building’s owner, said. Smith said he would repair the
building, which has seven apartments.
Johnson said the day’s heat was a problem in fighting the fire. The fire department set up a cooling station for firefighters in the shade across the street from the fire.
