Syracuse, NY – There was a cop around this morning when Louisa A. Marano needed one. Two, in fact.

Marano, 28, of Clay, was driving her Mercury Cougar about 2:04 a.m. on Interstate 690 West near the Townsend Street off ramp when a Volkwagen Jetta moved from the center lane into the right lane, cutting off the Cougar, Trooper Todd Madely said.

Marano swerved to avoid hitting the Jetta, Madely said. The Mercury hit the guard rail on the right, then crossed the superhighway and hit the guard rail on the left before coming to rest.

Madely said he and his partner, Trooper Michael Schwarz, saw the incident first hand -- they were driving behind the Jetta when the accident unfolded.

“Luckily no other vehicles were coming westbound,” Madely said. “Otherwise there would have been a very serious accident."

The Jetta continued on. Schwarz dropped Madely off to tend to Marano while he pursued the car. He stopped it and issued a ticket to its driver, Michael Q. Holloman, 20, of Syracuse, for failing to maintain his assigned lane, Madely said.

Marano was taken to Crouse Hospital with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries, Madely said. She was wearing a seatbelt and both front airbags deployed, he said.

Marano's condition was not immediately available.
