A team led by Pennsylvania State University will receive up to $122 million from the federal government over the next five years to establish an energy research center — beating out, among others, a proposed research center that would have been based in Syracuse.

The Department of Energy said the “energy innovation hub” will be located at the Philadelphia Navy Yard Clean Energy campus and will bring together leading researchers from academia, two U.S. National Laboratories and the private sector to develop energy-efficient building designs.

Syracuse University, working with nearly a dozen universities across New York state and dozens of economic development groups, governmental agencies and private-sector organizations, had submitted a proposal for an energy research center that would have been based at the Syracuse Center of Excellence.

Research done in Syracuse would have been tested on commercial buildings throughout the state, including New York City, under the New York proposal.
