Weedsport, NY – A truck driver from Ohio was brought to a Syracuse hospital for treatment after the tractor trailer he was driving flipped over this morning on the state Thruway just west of Weedsport Exit 40.
The accident about 5:35 a.m. slowed eastbound traffic as authorities detoured vehicles onto the exit ramp, around the toll booth and back onto the superhighway, state police Sgt. Robert Simon said. Crews pulled the truck, the box of which had landed on the roadway, onto the grass near the ramp, allowing the driving lanes to reopen about 7:15 a.m., he said.
The trucker, Michael E. Sullivan, 40, of Felicity, Ohio, told troopers he had to hit the brakes when a car abruptly changed lanes in front of his vehicle, Simon said. The truck went off the passenger’s side shoulder, hit a guardrail and overturned, Simon said.
Sullivan suffered hip, neck and back injuries and was taken to Upstate University Hospital for treatment, Simon said. His condition was not immediately available.
Sullivan’s cargo of cardboard boxes remained intact but the truck spilled about 100 gallons of diesel fuel. Simon said a state Department of Environmental Conservation crew was expected to finish a cleanup this morning.
