Oswego, NY -- The Oswego Canal from Phoenix to Oswego is closed due to high water.
Carmella Mantello, director of the state Canal Corp., said Monday night that the rain the area received all day Sunday and into Monday resulted in high water levels in the canal. A part of the Erie Canal from New London in Oneida County east to Waterford also was closed due to high water.
Mantello said the water levels will be reviewed this morning to see if the Oswego and Erie canals can reopen.
Canal Corp. workers are clearing debris that has washed up along the canals and is clogging dams. Workers also are replacing buoys along the canals that have become displaced.
"We have 300 buoys and they are all over the place," she said.
Boaters along the canals also were notified and told to tie up their boats to wait for the water levels to go down. A few boaters in the Erie Canal in the Mohawk Valley region had to evacuate their boats for safety.
