Excellus BlueCross BlueShield is seeking approval from the state Insurance Department to increase rates on some of its health insurance policies in Central New York in 2011 from 4 percent to as much as 12.5 percent, depending on the product.
Reader tollie59 had this to say about the proposed rate boost:
"Why not? They've been increasing at this rate for years, while decreasing coverage and increasing out of pocket costs. With inflation supposedly flat, unemployment up and housing down, it is a no-brainer that they would want more obscene increases. Pretty much looks like you have to be at least an insurance company VP to be able to afford coverage. Oh wait - they probably get free or heavily discounted coverage."
