Syracuse, NY -- A former employee got burned by his own lighter when police used it to link him to a number of burglaries at a UPS Store.
Lawrence W. Davis, 41, of 1617 Hawley Ave, had worked at the UPS Store at 118 Julian Place, police said, but no longer does.
In the past nine months, police responded to three burglaries and one attempted burglary at the UPS on Syracuse’s East Side, said Syracuse Police Sgt. Tom Connellan.
Because of how the store was burglarized, police suspected it was an inside job from the start, Connellan said. Police found that Davis had a criminal record in South Carolina, he said.
During an investigation of the attempted burglary, which took place in January, Evidence Technician Becki Jandzio spotted a cigarette lighter on the ground near the window the through which the would-be burglar attempted to enter the store. A DNA test of the red Bic lighter linked it to Davis, Connellan said.
Davis was taken into custody Wednesday and has confessed to the burglaries, he said.
Davis is charged with three counts of burglary, one count of attempted burglary and four counts of petit larceny.
