DeWitt, NY -- People were lined up outside the doors of the former Bon Ton store at Shoppingtown before the 9 a.m. start of the Newspapers In Education used book sale.

Proceeds from the sale will pay for newspapers for students who take part in the Newspapers In Education program in Central New York, said Vicki Krisak who runs the NIE program for The Post-Standard.

More than 100,000 books -- enough to fill a small college library -- were donated in recent weeks. While thousands were sold during the first day of sales, more books -- stacked in boxes that once held bananas, beer or copier paper -- will be brought out as the sale continues Saturday and Sunday, said Taylor Clark, who also works at the Post-Standard.

Choices ran from classics to romance novels to biographies and political jeremiads. Best sellers were well represented with volumes by David Baldacci, Nora Roberts and Mario Puzo overflowing boxes.

Shoppers took advantage of prices -- $2 for hardcover books, $1 for hardcover children's books and two for $1 for paperbacks -- to fill bags, boxes and even wheeled carts Friday. One person bought $500 worth of books, organizers reported.

Remaining sale hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
