Madison County health officials closed the beach at Sunset Properties at Lewis Point in the town of Lenox Friday after finding high levels of coliform bacteria in the water.
Public Health Director Eric Faisst said swimming will not be allowed until the bacteria levels return to acceptable levels. County officials are working with the beach operator to monitor the water quality.
The announcement followed a spate of closures of public swimming areas on Oneida Lake last week. Faisst said the bacteria generally does not cause illness and advised residents with concerns about gastrointestinal symptoms to contact their health care providers.
