Update:
East Syracuse, NY -- Police reopened Hartwell Avenue shortly before 9 a.m. after crews cleaned up a two-car crash that sent the drivers to the hospital.

The identities of the operators were not available. East Syracuse Officer Christopher Rowe said both suffered neck pain and the driver of one of the vehicles, a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, also received facial cuts. Both were taken by ambulance to Upstate University Hospital, Rowe said.

The head-on crash took place shortly before 8:10 a.m. at a 90-degree bend in Hartwell Avenue, a road that connects East Manlius Street and Kirkville Road.

Rowe said the driver of the Wrangler, which was traveling toward Kirkville Road, apparently became distracted. The SUV also may have been going too fast for the curve, he said. The vehicle crossed into the oncoming lane and collided with a silver Subaru Impreza, Rowe said.

The Wrangler went off the right side of the road into a ditch in a thicket of woods. Police closed the road around the accident so both cars could be loaded onto flatbed trucks.

DeWitt police assisted in the investigation.
