Palermo, NY -- The ultralight aircraft pilots gathered in Palermo Thursday through Sunday for the Summer’s End event at Gulliver’s Wilderness Airpark will honor Robert Hurd with a flyover Friday.
Hurd, 71, of Camden, died Wednesday when his ultralight pontoon plane crashed into a swamp near First Lake outside Old Forge, Herkimer County. Hurd had attended ultralight fly-in events at Gulliver’s for 12 years.
Jean Gulliver, one of the owners of the airpark, said Hurd also was well known for flying the pontoon plane into Sandy Pond during the summer. She said Hurd had been flying for 50 years.
Gulliver said the pilots will fly off together Friday afternoon or early Friday evening and then come back and circle the pond on the airpark property in memory of Hurd. Those at the event also are wearing buttons with Hurd’s photo on it.
