Syracuse, NY – State and federal officials have not found any direct distribution to New York of eggs that have been recalled by an Iowa producer tied to a salmonella outbreak, a state Health Department spokesman said.

The state Department of Agriculture and Markets and the federal Food and Drug Administration now are checking whether eggs produced by Wright County Egg, of Galt, Iowa, may have been shipped elsewhere and then reshipped into New York, said Pete Constantakes, speaking for the state Health Department. That agency is working with Agriculture and Markets on the search.

The Health Department has received no reports of salmonella connected with the recall, Constantakes said.

Wright County Egg has recalled 380 million eggs after the company was linked to an outbreak of salmonella that has made hundreds of people ill across the country since May.

The eggs were marketed under the Lucerne, Albertsons, Mountain Dairy, Ralph’s, Boomsma’s, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms, Kemps, James Farms, Glenview and Pacific Coast brand names, the company said in a statement posted Wednesday on the FDA’s Web site.

Wegmans supermarkets’ egg cartons bear the legend “farm fresh,” but that is a marketing statement, not a brand name, said Evelyn Carter, speaking from the company’s Syracuse office. Wegmans’ eggs are produced in New York and are not part of the Wright County Egg recall, she said.

“Our label says that simply to mean our eggs are fresh from the farm and should not be confused with the Farm Fresh brand of eggs, which are not sold in our stores,” Carter said.

Tops Friendly Markets, which operates 15 supermarkets in Onondaga and the four surrounding counties, also is not affected. The Buffalo-based chain gets its eggs from Kreher Farms in Clarence, spokeswoman Katie McKenna said. Kreher also supplies Wegmans' eggs.
