Syracuse, NY -- The union representing musicians at the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra agreed today to cut six weeks from the 2010-11 season, the symphony said.
“They ratified the contract; we didn’t expect anything different,” said Vicky D'Agostino, speaking for the symphony.
The union represents 63 core musicians and 14 contract players. A union representative could not be reached for comment this afternoon.
The orchestra has operated with deficits since 2007, and a contributor came to the orchestra’s rescue in June when it came close to shutting down. It cut short this season by two weeks. See our previous coverage.
In 2009, union members agreed to a three-year contract that froze their salaries for two years. Today they agreed to cut the season from 40 to 34 weeks.
