State environmental officials have exempted Honeywell International from any obligation to obtain permits from the town of Camillus to dispose of contaminated sediment from the bottom of Onondaga Lake in Wastebed 13.

While some users of syracuse.com are outraged that the state decided to bypass the town, others note that the plans has been in the works for years. Here's what one user, myrbch443, had to say:

I remember a headline in the Syracuse Herald Journal from the early 70's that said the lake would be cleaned up in 10 years. How short-sighted, considering all the nonsense that has occurred since then. The lake needs to be cleaned up. Slowing this down again for the umpteenth time serves no one. The wastebeds in Geddes and Camillus have been there for years. Let Honeywell finish the job at hand, and require them to be responsible for the disposal. Otherwise, Onondaga Lake has no chance of ever seeing normal public use. Too many generations of people here have only been able to look at the lake. Now we have the opportunity to have our kids and grandkids actually using it in the near future. We owe them no less.
